East River

The New York City 16-mile-long tidal strait divides Manhattan Island, or Manhattan and The Bronx boroughs, from Long Island, or Brooklyn and Queens boroughs and is spanned by many bridges including the famous Brooklyn Bridge. Tunnels, subways and railroads pass beneath the East River, which also contains numerous islands including Riker's Island that contains the city's primary jail system. The strait, which dates back more than 11,000 years, is not safe to swim in because of pollution.
