The tallest dam in the United States is this 770-foot high embankment dam on the Feather River near the California city of Oroville. It was built from 1961-68 to hold more than 3.5 million acre-feet of water. Oroville Dam is used for water supply, flood control and hydroelectricity. Its construction created the state's second largest man-made lake with Oroville Lake at 15,805 acres. The Feather River Fish Hatchery was created in 1962 because the dam blocked the migration of salmon and other fish.
