California State Capitol

Symbols of the 31st state's history including the grizzly bear, golden poppy, California Great Seal and the Roman goddess Minerva are displayed in art throughout this Neo-classical structure located in Sacramento. California State Capitol Building was constructed from 1860-74 using a design by M. Frederic Butler. There are more than 50 paintings in the Capitol's permanent collection displayed within the building and many more to see from the Loan Collection and the Biennial Senate Contemporary Art Collection. California State Capitol Building also contains many murals, historic flags, government chambers and Capitol Park monuments. It is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
