This Northeastern California region is protected under the 39,116-acre Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge formed in 1928 as a breeding location for wild birds and other animals. Wildlife that can be observed in the Tule Lake Basin include eagles, ducks, geese, hawks, deer, coyotes, bobcats, badgers, beavers, rabbits and frogs. The basin has about 17,000 acres of crop lands growing potatoes, onions, alfalfa, horse radishes and cereal grains.
