Lava Beds National Monument

Explore more than 700 lava tube caves, cinder cones, Native American rock art and old battlefields at this remarkable Northeastern California national monument of more than 46,000 acres of land around the Medicine Lake shield volcano. Lava Beds National Monument was created in 1925 and was the site of the Modoc War between the Modoc Native Americans and the United States Army during 1872-73. Monument points of interest are Symbol Bridge, Big Painted Cave, Mammoth Crater, Hidden Valley, Petroglyph Point, Fleener Chimneys, Black Crater, Thomas-Wright Battlefield and Captain Jack's Stronghold.
