Madison Square Park

The 6.2 acre Manhattan park named after United States President James Madison had been a public space since 1686 and officially became a park in 1847. Madison Square Park, which is surrounded by wealthy homes and luxury hotels, was designed by William Grant and Ignatz Pilat in 1870 and underwent a $6 million renovation in 2001 with a new paving, lighting, landscaping, benches a restored fountain and a reflecting pool. The first baseball team The New York Knickerbockers was created here in 1845 so some people refer to the park as "The Birthplace of Baseball."
