Castelo de Sao Jorge (St. George's Castle)

This historic castle was the main residence of Portugal’s past monarchs and overlooks Lisbon’s oldest district, the Alfama, from its perch on the city’s highest hill. Built in the mid-11th century during the Moorish era, a palace complex was later built within St. George’s Castle, which is enclosed by lofty outer walls that afford majestic views of Lisbon. Visitors will be amazed by the Tower of Ulysses, which houses a camera obscura, an optical device invented by Leonardo da Vinci that projects live images from around the city onto the tower walls.
