St. Basil's Cathedral

The stunning architectural jewel is a symbol of Moscow dominating Red Square and one of the most celebrated structures not only in Russia, but the world. St. Basil's Cathedral was built from 1555-61 and designed by architects Barma and Postnik Yakovlev. Ivan the Terrible had the cathedral built to commemorate the taking of Kazan from the Mongols in 1552 during the Russo-Kazan Wars. It's also known as The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin by the Moat. St. Basil's Cathedral is now a museum and has a service every year for the Day of Intercession in October. In addition to Red Square and the Kremlin, it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
