Royal Palace of Madrid

Although the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, they in fact live at the Palacio de la Zarzuela. The Royal Palace of Madrid, the city's largest building, today is only used for state ceremonies, but is open to the public year-round except on days of official ceremonies. Located next to magnificent Plaza de Oriente, the palace was built on the site of the old Alcazar, a Moorish castle destroyed by fire in 1734. Inside, visitors will find tapestries, paintings and frescoes by Velazquez and Goya.
