La Brea Tar Pits

Surrounded by Hancock Park in Los Angeles, La Brea Tar Pits have held the remains of ancient animals for millions of years. Steadily over the centuries, the tar has risen through the ground along with the preserved bones of various animals, including sabertooth tigers, wooly mammoths, dire wolves, giant ground sloths, and the 10,000 year old human skeleton. Managed by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the tar pits are researched and protected by the La Brea Tar Pits Museum.
