La Scala

Officially called Teatro alla Scala, the world famous opera house in Milan has hosted the best and most famous opera stars in Italy and around the world. La Scala premiered in 1778 under the name New Royal-Ducal Theatre alla Scala with a performance of Europa riconosciuta by Antonio Salieri. The structure had to be reconstructed after it was nearly destroyed by World War II bombing and it later underwent major renovations from 2002-04. It is the home base of a chorus, ballet, orchestra and theater academy. La Scala contains a museum on opera history.
