La Scala premiered in 1778 under the name New Royal-Ducal Theatre alla Scala with a performance of Europa riconosciuta by Antonio Salieri. The structure had to be reconstructed after it was nearly destroyed by World War II bombing and it later underwent major renovations from 2002-04.
