Boldt Castle

This enchanting castle on Heart Island in the Thousand Islands has a fascinating tale behind it. Boldt Castle was designed by architects G. W. & W. D. Hewitt and commissioned by rich hotel tycoon George C. Boldt for his wife Louise to be their "dream summer home" on the St. Lawrence River. Construction began in 1900, however, Louise unexpectedly passed away shortly before the castle was to be finished. Boldt was heartbroken and left the palace unfinished for more than 70 years. Today, the restored Boldt Castle and the Boldt Yacht House are available for tours and events on the five-acre Heart Island located on the U.S. side of the Thousand Islands.
