The main thoroughfare of San Francisco is lined with stores, restaurants and attractions running from The Embarcadero to Corbett Avenue in the Twin Peaks neighborhood. Market Street was laid out by engineer Jasper O'Farrell in 1847 and has long been a important parade route. It used to contain many theaters and earned the nickname "The Great White Way" because of all of its neon signs. Points of interest along Market Street include The Embarcadero, Ferry Building, Civic Center and the Orpheum Theatre.
