An esplanade and seawall stretching for 5 miles (8km) along the historical areas of Havana, Cuba, the Malecon was originally built in 1901 by the Americans who were occupying the country at the time. From the people who come to fish off the seawall to promenading lovers enjoying the romantic view of the Bay, the Malecon attracts many ordinary Cubans and is a good place to enjoy the atmosphere of real Havana. This quintessentially Cuban thoroughfare is especially beautiful at night, when the sunset lights up the pastel-colored facades of the heritage architecture.
