Aso Volcano
Aso Volcano, located in the northeastern part of Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu Island, is an active volcano with a rare caldera landscape. It is one of the few places where you can observe an active volcano up close. From here, you can gaze down into the crater and see plumes of white smoke rising, allowing you to experience the tremendous power of nature and enjoy spectacular views.
▼ Aso Kusasenri Grassland
Kusasenri is a large meadow located at the northern foot of Mount Eboshi. In the center of the meadow is a pond formed by rainwater, with cows and horses grazing peacefully. Throughout the year, different landscapes can be enjoyed in this 20,000-hectare vast grassland. You can take a leisurely stroll through the lush green grass, watch the freely roaming cows and sheep, and breathe in the fresh mountain air, creating a sense of peace and serenity as if you were in a fairyland.
Aso Volcano Museum (Admission: 1,100 JPY, optional)
The Aso Volcano Museum, located by the expansive Kusasenri, showcases the geography, geology, and flora and fauna of Aso Volcano. It houses an extensive collection of materials about the history of the volcano. You can explore a large three-dimensional model that illustrates the formation of Aso Volcano and learn about volcanoes from Japan and around the world. The museum also features live broadcasts of Nakadake Crater through a camera system.
Horseback Riding Experience at Kusasenri (Optional): A: Approx. 5 minutes for 1,500 JPY; B: Approx. 20 minutes for 4,000 JPY; C: Approx. 25 minutes for 5,000 JPY
Interested in experiencing horseback riding in the magnificent nature of Aso? Experienced staff will lead you on a gentle stroll with the horses, so even children and first-time riders can feel safe. Enjoy the cool breeze and take in the natural beauty while riding gently through the meadows. Kusasenri's great location allows you to take in the breathtaking landscape while experiencing the thrill of horseback riding.

*Depending on the situation, the bus may take you to the departure point, and you will need to reunite with the group at the bus parking lot.
Enjoy a scenic helicopter flight over Aso Volcano and the Nakadake Crater! From the helicopter, you will see a panoramic view of the crater and the surrounding caldera mountains. The sight of smoke rising from the active volcano is truly striking. In different seasons, you may also see blooming azaleas in the misty mountains, controlled burning scenes, green meadows, and snow-covered landscapes.

Aso boasts one of the world’s largest volcanic craters and grand outer rim mountains. At this roadside station, you can find various local specialties like seasonal vegetables, fruits, meat, dairy products, desserts, and handmade lunch boxes that are exclusive to the area. Additionally, there is a statue of Usopp from the popular manga One Piece, created in collaboration with the local manga artist Eiichiro Oda.

The Aso Boy train is designed with children's experiences in mind, featuring 101 "Kokoro" mascots that accompany children throughout the journey. There are special seats for children, and the train includes a small play area with wooden balls, a mini tea room, and a library. The seats are designed for comfort, with footrests and backs specifically for children.
Mascot Kokoro
"Kokoro" is the JR Kyushu mascot and has become the virtual stationmaster of the Aso Boy Train. Kokoro creates a child-friendly atmosphere and serves as an ambassador for friendly interactions with children, adults, and even other IP characters. Kokoro can be seen all around the train, from the exterior to the interior, and even in souvenirs, adding extra fun to the children's journey.
