Founded in 1861 as the Territorial University of Washington, this Seattle educational institution is one of the oldest universities located on the West Coast of the United States. University of Washington is situated on Union Bay in Seattle's University District neighborhood with the 325-foot tall University of Washington Plaza dominating the skyline. Its current and former faculty consists of six Nobel Prize laureates, two Pulitzer Prize winners, one Fields Medal recipient, 15 MacArthur Fellows and five National Medal of Science winners. Famous alumni include martial arts legend Bruce Lee, MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe, Baskin Robbins co-founder Irv Robbins and architect Minoru Yamasaki.
