Built between 1911-1934, Lake Washington Ship Canal joins Lake Washington and Puget Sound and has become a major tourist attraction because of its seven acres of botanical gardens and underground viewing area to see fish migration. It attracts more than 1.5 million people per year and the Visitors Center gives guided tours and has exhibits illustrating the canal's history. Lake Washington Ship Canal is on the U.S. Register of Historic Places along with the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks used for the change in water level of the lake and sound.
