The Castro District

The largest gay community and one of the first homosexual neighborhoods in the United States is this tourist hot spot in San Francisco. The Castro District was established in 1887 with working class families until after the Summer of Love in 1967 when many homosexual young people migrated to the area. Gay rights activist Harvey Milk opened a camera store there in 1973. The Castro attractions include Castro Theatre, GLBT Museum, Pink Triangle Park, Harvey Milk Plaza, Harvey's Bar and Hartford Street Zen Center.
