Pena Palace

A creative project of King Ferdinand II, Pena National Palace was once a summer residence for the royal family. Built from 1842–1854, the UNESCO World Heritage Site sits atop a hill in São Pedro de Penaferrim in Sintra. It is a stunning example of 19th century romanticism, and incorporates Manueline and Moorish influences in its architecture. The palace is surrounded by a forest and gardens that include 500 different species of trees.
