The large Boston art gallery that opened in 1876 now has nearly 450,000 artworks and has more than one million annual visitors. Murals depicting mythological scenes created by noted artist John Singer Sargent adorn the walls of the Ruth and Carl J. Shapiro Colonnade. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston encyclopedic collection is comprised of Art of the Americas; Art of the Ancient World; Art of Asia, Oceania and Africa; Art of Europe; Contemporary Art; Musical Instruments; Prints, Drawings, and Photographs; and David and Roberta Logie Department of Textile and Fashion Arts.
