Joya de Ceren

Originally a pre-Colombian Maya farming village, Joya de Ceren is a major archaeological site in the La Libertad region of El Salvador. Considered the "Pompei of America," it was inhabited as early as 1200 BC but evacuated in 200 AD due to the eruption of the Ilopango Volcano. Though it was repopulated in 400 AD, the village was destroyed by the eruption of 590 AD by Loma Caldera. The ashfall preserved the village, allowing archaeologists today to study the artifacts left behind.
