Iwo Jima Memorial

Officially called The Marine Corps War Memorial, the 32-foot tall bronze monument located next to Arlington National Cemetery depicts the six men who raised the second flag over Iwo Jima. It is dedicated to all Marines who lost their lives while defending their country since Nov. 10, 1775. The sculpture by Felix de Weldon was modeled after the acclaimed photo taken by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal of the five Marines and one Navy corpsman raising the second flag during World War II's Battle of Iwo Jima. President Dwight D. Eisenhower dedicated the memorial on the 179th anniversary of the Marine Corps on Nov. 10, 1954.
