The small private island of Great Stirrup Cay is part of the Berry Islands in the Bahamas. Great Stirrup, along with the rest of the Bahamas was formed by tectonic and glacial shifting. The first known settlers are speculated to have been the Lucayan Indians, however the Great Stirrup Cay was once a pirate hideout during the 17th century, making it one of the first documented settlements. The island is known for its sandy beaches, snorkeling areas and its lighthouse which was constructed in 1863.
