This cathedral and minor basilica in Oviedo was founded in 781 AD by King Fruela I of Asturias and enlarged in 802 by his son Alfonso II of Asturias. The Cathedral of San Salvador today consists of an array of architectural styles, including pre-Romanesque, Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance. San Salvador, also known as Sancta Ovetensis due to both the quality and quantity of the relics found within its walls, is where the Way of St. James began during the reign of Alfonso II.
