The oldest Spanish settlement in Cuba, the city of Baracoa is located on the eastern tip of the country in Guantánamo Province. One of the city’s main attractions is Las Cuevas del Paraíso, a series of caves that were once the burial chambers of the area’s original inhabitants, the Taino, and contain skeletons, ceramics and ancient petroglyphs. Covered with lush vegetation due to its abundant rainfall, Baracoa is also home to the Yunque (Anvil) of Baracoa, a high mountain with a flat top that is visible from sea and the city’s most famous natural landmark.
