Bingham Canyon Mine

Also known as Kennecott Copper Mine, the open-pit copper mining site is located in the Oquirrh Mountains near Salt Lake City. Bingham Canyon Mine operations began in 1906 creating a 2.5 mile-wide hole stretching 1,900 acres that is .6 miles deep after years of mining. Brothers Sanford and Thomas Bingham found copper in the canyon back in 1848 and the mine is now owned by the British company Rio Tinto Group. Copper mining is done through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation. The mine is a U.S. National Historic Landmark.
