About SoHo

The eclectic Lower Manhattan neighborhood noted for many cast iron buildings is filled with stores, art galleries, art studios, eateries and lofts. SoHo is short for "South of Houston Street" and its land was first granted to freed Black slaves of the Dutch West India Company in 1644 establishing a majority African American population until the mid-1800s when commercial development of the area began. The neighborhood is a U.S. National Historic Landmark and has the largest grouping of cast iron structures in the world with approximately 250.
