Formed alongside Captiva Island over 6,000 years ago, Sanibel was once apart of the Calusa Empire, which encompassed Southern Florida nearly 2,500 years ago prior to the arrival of Europeans. Alongside being the center of pirate legends, the island is home to J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge which focus heavily on preserving the island's natural life. Many visitors from all around the world come to the island to see the fantastic array of seashells that wash up along the beach, so much so that the act of bending to pick up the shells is known as the "Sanibel Stoop."
