The official home of Canada's governor general started out as a stone villa built by Thomas Mackay in 1838 and now is a 175-room baroque building surrounded by 24 other structures situated on 102,000 square feet in Ottawa. Visitors can tour the elegantly decorated rooms containing cherished Canadian art and furniture and explore the vast grounds with the Canadian Heritage Gardens, more than 10,000 trees, green lawns and numerous paths. Rideau Hall, which is a National Historic Site of Canada, hosts government events, award ceremonies and foreign officials.
