About Rathaus-Glockenspiel

A popular tourist attraction in the Marienplatz of Munich, the Rathaus Glockenspiel does what a cookoo clock does but on a clock tower scale. Everyday at 11:00am the Munich New Town Hall chimes and the figures in the Glockenspiel's two balconies reenact two scenes form the 16th century. The upper half retells the marriage of Duke Wilhelm V to Renata of Lorraine, complete with an honorary jousting match with a pair of knights. The lower half reenacts the Schäfflertanz, or Cooper's Dance, where a Cooper (barrel maker) dances through the plague filled Munich to display perseverance during troubling times. The whole show lasts 15 minutes.
