A 110 km (68 mi) south of Trelew, the Punta Tombo peninsula is the famous home to the largest colony of Magellanic penguins. One of the major tourist attractions in the Chubut province, the area is protected by provincial degree as a biological reserve, banning all visitors from touching or interacting with the penguins. Here, thousands of penguins migrate from southern Brazil to nest and raise their chicks. The first penguins arrive in September, but the best time to spot them is in November.
