About Mont-Louis Citadel

Standing at the highest point of the fortified town of Mont-Louis, the Mont-Louis Citadel is a shining example of 17th century military architecture. The citadel, protected on three sides by stone walls and on the fourth side by a steep slope down to the River Tet below, was built in response to France's ongoing war with Spain in the late 17th century. Though the citadel remains an active military base dedicated to training French commando units, guided tours of the citadel and surrounding town occur daily.
