The final resting place of explorer Vasco da Gama is also the epitome of Portuguese late Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, UNESCO says the Monastery of Los Jeronimos, at the entrance of Lisbon harbor, “exemplifies Portuguese art at its best.” It is also the most impressive symbol of Portugal’s power and wealth during the Age of Discovery. Built in 1502, the monastery is where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in Portugal before leaving for India.
