About Massachusetts State House

Located on 6.7 acres of Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood, the state government structure contains the 1784 "Sacred Cod" wooden ornament hanging over Massachusetts House of Representatives chambers to represent the importance of the fishing industry to the local economy. Massachusetts State House's building was originally designed by Charles Bulfinch in 1798 followed by further expansions drawn up by architects Charles Brigham in the late 1800s and Sturgis, Chapman & Andrews in the early 1900s. The structure's dome is covered with 23-karat gold.
