About Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial

This Washington, D.C. memorial was dedicated on Aug. 28, 2011, which was 48 years after the civil rights leader's "I Have a Dream" speech on the nearby Lincoln Memorial steps and is the first monument in the National Mall to honor an African American. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial has a 30-foot statue of King carved into the Stone of Hope that rises from two large pieces of granite depicting the Mountain of Despair referring to King's speech quote "Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope."
