Located just southwest of Santiago and the nearest wine region to the capital, Maipo Valley covers roughly 7,302 acres (2955 ha) and includes some of the best wineries in Chile. Most of the land is dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon and the region is called the "Bordeaux of South America." The valley is separated from Argentina by the Andes Mountain Range to the east, but it is relatively close to the Argentinian province of Mendoza, another major Southern American wine region. The valley is separated into three subsections Alto, Central, and Pacifico, the quality of wine increasing the nearer the vineyard is to the Andes.
