The near-mile-long railway carrying passengers up a steep 72.7 grade on Lookout Mountain to obtain amazing views of the City of Chattanooga, surrounding mountains and the Tennessee River has become a city icon. Lookout Mountain Incline Railway began operation in 1895 with the tram ride starts at St. Elmo's Station to travel up to the mountain's peak of Point Park. The Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark also is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
