One of the newest United States National Natural Landmarks are these amazing limestone caves near Shasta Lake in California that date back more than 250 million years. Lake Shasta Caverns have eight rooms featuring formations of stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and flowstone. Local J. A. Richardson wrote an inscription on a cave wall documenting his Nov. 3, 1878 discovery of the caverns. Visitors will take a catamaran ride across the lake to access the intriguing caverns.
