The deepest lake in Guatemala at 340 metres (1,120 ft), Lake Atitlan is home to many villages influenced by Maya culture. The largest of these communities is Santiago Atitlan which is known for the worship of Maximon, a icon based on Maya deities, Catholic saints, and conquistador legends; in contrast, one of the other large communities is Panajachel, which has grown from foreign retirees and travelers. A major tourist site and attraction in Guatemala, the lake is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.
