The Canadian maximum security prison operating continuously from June 1, 1835 to Sept. 30, 2013 is a domed building constructed so the prisoners could be directly monitored in their cells and contains a Regional Treatment Centre. Kingston Penitentiary housed 350-500 prisoners and approximately 150 in the treatment center each with their own cell before it was shut down. The National Historic Site of Canada is situated across from the Correctional Service of Canada Museum that contains relics, photos and historical information on many of Canada's prison institutions.
