This sandstone bridge that crosses the Neckar River in Heidelberg is one of the last great examples of a classical stone bridge. The Alte Brucke (Old Bridge), first built in 1788, was blown up during WWII by retreating German troops as American troops approached the town. Today the Old Bridge is famous for the Brass Monkey statue that holds a mirror and is surrounded by mice. Almost everyone who crosses the bridge touches the mirror for wealth, the outstretched fingers to ensure their return to Heidelberg and the mice to ensure they have many children.
