About Guimaraes

Come visit the place where Portugal was born! This important historical city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its well-preserved architectural treasures, from the 10th century medieval castle to the 15th century Dukes of Braganza Palace. For spectacular views of the city, walk or take an elevator to the top of Penha Mountain. There are 16th century bourgeoisie houses that dot the city. They are particularly spectacular around Olive Square, which is one of the most beautiful spots in Guimaraes. Dine at one of the many lively outdoor cafes and be sure to try the local specialty wine, vinho verde.
