The city of Dawson, Georgia was founded in 1856 and was incorporated as a city in 1872. Dawson is a small city that is part of the Albany, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area and has a population of around 4,000 as of 2013. The city of Dawson is also the birthplace and hometown of legendary American soul singer Otis Redding.
