About Conservatory of Flowers

Opened in 1879, this Victorian conservatory's building materials were found in crates in the belongings of San Jose businessman James Lick after he passed away in 1868. Golden Gate Park's Conservatory of Flowers is a U.S. National Historic Landmark and the oldest wood and glass conservatory on the continent. It struggled throughout the years with mishaps and financial woes, but was able to secure funding for a major renovation from 1999 to 2003 at which time the destination was closed. The floral attraction has permanent tropic plants native to the rainforest as well as temporary displays.
