About Columbia University

The Ivy League institution was established in 1754 as King's College by the charter of England's King George II making it the oldest university in New York and the fifth in the United States. The American Revolution forced the school to close for eight years and it re-opened as Columbia College and then in 1896 became Columbia University, which has been at its current location in Morningside Heights since 1897. Columbia University hands out the Pulitzer Prize every year and was the first U.S. school to award the Doctor of Medicine degree.
