About Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo is the medieval quarter, and up until the end of the 19th century, the walled part of the city of Bilbao. Its shops and taverns, several historical churches (San Anton, Santos Juanes, San Nicolas), large market (Mercado de la Ribera), and public theater and library make it a popular destination for local and tourist alike. Bilbao Old Town originally comprised the streets Somera, Artekale, Tenderia, Carniceria Vieja, Belostikale, Barrenkale and Barrenkale Barrena, hence the moniker Seven Streets (Las Siete Calles). Other points of interest include Santiago Cathedral, the Basque Archeology Museum, and the Sacred Art Museum inside La Encarnacion Convent.
