About Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Containing more than 119 caves created from sulfuric acid eroding limestone, this New Mexico national park has many fascinating rooms and formations to explore. Carlsbad Caverns National Park was created in 1978 and designated a national monument in 1973. Cowboy Jim White was the first to explore Carlsbad Caverns in 1898. The natural phenomenon is visited by more than 400,000 people per year and is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. The park has two national historic districts and its museum contains more than one million cultural relics.
