About Cannery Row

Originally called Ocean View Avenue, this street's name was changed to its nickname Cannery Row in 1958 by the City of Monterey to recognize famous author John Steinbeck who wrote about it and the people he met there in his novel "Cannery Row." The Monterey Bay waterfront area that was settled by immigrant fishermen in the mid-1800s and was once home to numerous sardine canning factories now is lined with restaurants, stores, hotels, museums and attractions. Cannery Row, which also was the title of a 1982 movie based on two Steinbeck novels, is the site of the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
