About Campeche

Built atop the Maya city of Can-Peh, San Francisco de Campeche rests on the shore of the Bay of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico and is the capital of the Mexican state of Campeche. Frequently attacked by famous English pirates like Francis Drake and John Hawkins, the city was fortified with a single, unifying wall. Due to the preservation of the fortifications and the colonial architecture, the city was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999.
